How much to spend??

logo

I am working really hard at getting out of debt but I have been having a few problems. I am trying to come up with my budget. I can not figure out how much I should be spending for grocery shopping. I have waivered back and forth between about $70 to $180. I want to spend what is appropiate for a family of 6 which includes 4 very picky kids. I do want to buy so much cheap, generic stuff that no one will want to eat it. But I do not want to waste a whole lot of money either. I am going to keep surfing the web to look for some type of answer. Maybe someone will see this post and give some advice. We live in Milwaukee Wisconsin and I shop primarily at Aldi’s, Walmart, Pick and Save and Sentry.

How much you should spend on groceries should really depend on how many people you have in your household and the meals you plan on eating.
Dave Ramsey has always said that you should budget for your food first because, well, you gotta eat!
Don’t hold back too much on healthy groceries so that you can just get out of debt 1 or 2 months quicker.
Since you have a family of 6, what if everyone got one night to pick what they wanted to eat and then one night could be left overs!

Thanks Ryan. That is a really good idea. I think the kids will get a kick out of picking the meal.

Can you train your “four picky kids” to be less picky?

There’s nothing wrong with cheap, generic food if it’s prepared well and served with love.

If you don’t provide the expensive alternatives, they can choose to eat what you put out, or nothing, ya know?

(That being said, I don’t yet have kids so I might not know what I’m talking about at all).

I’d suggest you keep track of your grocery receipts to find out exactly how much you’re spending and what you’re buying.

If you plan your weekly menus and stick to them, you’ll spend less and waste less.

Just try to feed your family the best you can on the least amount that you can, and keep on working to improve it.
