I have being doing ok during my journey to get out of debt. I have discovered a lot of useful tips that I have been able to work into my life. Some of these tips are common sense but I felt the need to post them anyway because I have a horrible memory.
Prepare your menu in advance according to what is on sale. This works well because then after I plan a menu I am not later stressing over what to cook.
Go shopping early in the morning. At Pick and Save , I have found great deals on meat that has been marked down and easy to freeze.
Do not shop on a empty stomach. I am still trying to master this one. But I have discovered when I am full and go shopping I spend a lot less money.
Instead of buying chicken separately buy it whole, separate it yourself and freeze what you do not need right away. I am clumsy with knives so I do not do the cutting. Luckily my husband is really good at cutting it up for me to freeze. Now I just have to remember what is in the freezer but that’s a story for a different day.
Keep your eye out for unadvertised specials. This is one of my favorite tips. I am to the point where I do it automatically whenever I do go shopping. As soon as I walk in, my eyes are scanning the shelves looking for yellow or red sale tags. I have found some great deals this way. Even my kids are starting to do it.
Use rainchecks. One of my favorite things to do is get rainchecks. My husband and I both like to wait until the last day of a sale to go grocery shopping. 99% of the time the store is out of the stuff that is on sale and we can get a raincheck. The rainchecks are usually good for up to 2 weeks. This is good if you are low on storage space or money and something is on sale at a really good price.
Use rebates. If you have rebate use them right away. After you put the groceries away, fill out the necessary form and get everything together so the next time you are out you can drop it off in the mail box. This works really good for me because I tend to lose receipts and proof of purchase barcodes.
Shop with a calculator. This tip really works. I no longer try to add up things in my head. So of course that means spending less at checkout which is always good.
Try to use only cash. I use cash at any store where I am not buying groceries. This is only because of the rewards program my bank offers in which i get cash back. (it also helps that all my credit cards are in the freezer)
Pay close attention when the cashier is ringing you up. This is a good thing to do to make sure you are not over charged. A lot of stores will give you the item for free if it rings up at the wrong price. I always love it when it happens to me. One time I got a huge family sized package of ground beef free because it rung up wrong.
Don’t forget your coupons! You may laugh but I have had those shopping trips where I get all the way up to the checkout and then realize I did not bring a single coupon. So if you cut them out make sure to use them.
Check your pantry and fridge before you leave. It makes no sense to buy something you already have. I hate when i forget to check.
