Kids and Cell Phones: Does it work?

In my family they do work. Jazz has had a cell phone since she graduated from 5th grade. She was starting middle school the next year and would be catching the school bus. I felt a cell phone was not only a good way for me to be able to reach her but for her to reach us. If the bus broke down, if she missed the school bus, or came across a situation where she did not feel safe, she would be able to call me. Summer was great practice. We went over the rules of how much the phone could be used and what she could not do. She is in 9th grade now and every once in a while we do come across a few issues. Like talking and texting way too much. I have heard all the news aboiut “sexting” and stuff like that. Luckily we have not come across that. I read Jazz’s text messages whenever I want and I have never seen anything inappropiate. She also is aware that we do not take nude pictures of ourselves to show anyone! I do not play when it comes to stuff like that.

In June, Nannah will be graduating and has been hinting about a cell phone. She is very different from Jazz and I worry about her even more. I want to get a phone that is best for her. Something that has a little more parental control. My biggest concern is knowing where she is. I have been checking out the phones at Kejeet. There is no contract or activation fee so that is good. I am interested in a pay as you go phone. The current plan we have for Jazz is under a contract. Each kajeet phone comes with these management controls for FREE. I am in control of who Nannah can talk to and text, what time of the day the phone can be used (even make exceptions for calls to me) how much money can be spent, and what features can be used. There is even the GPS locator that will put my mind at ease. When I looked around at the phones do offer the fancy ones that my kids like. This summer Nannah will be out with friends more and I would like to know I can reach her whenever I need to you. Now I understand that some parents do think kids should have cell phones.

I guess my question is what do you think when it comes to Kids and Cell Phones? If your kids do have cell phones what do you do to keep them safe? I would love to hear your opinion.
