Each blog will offer a different  giveaway which will include the Scholastic Children’s Dictionary. We were given one to review and my family is already using it. The Scholastic Dictionary has a hard cover and is easy to read with clear definitions.

The 2010 edition of the Scholastic Children’s Dictionary features more than 1,000 full-color photographs, simple sentences, illustrations, and diagrams as well as newly commissioned maps of the world, the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Central America. There are hundreds of new and expanded entries written by a prominent lexicographer as well as thousands of additional sample sentences to illustrate word usage. The dictionary also includes guides on grammar, punctuation and idioms and simplified pronunciations created with real kids in mind! The new Scholastic Children’s Dictionary is an essential resource that belongs in every home, classroom, and library.

For me one of the best parts of getting ready to go back to school is the shopping. It is just something about getting all the supplies my children need for the upcoming year that gets me all excited. With all the good deals going on, I am able to stock up while saving money. I have four kids ages 8-16 and they are in different stages when it comes to school. This means, when it comes to choosing the right book bag for my kids I don’t just run to the store to grab whatever available in their favorite color. I have to consider each of their individual needs: I pay attention to:

  • Features

Different compartments are great for helping kids to stay organized easily. If everything has a specific “home”, it is easier to find what you need when you need it. Book bags with wheels are usually fun for kids, but become a hassle during winter months. The weather where you live makes a difference. Book bags that have wide padded straps are comfortable and do not hurt their shoulders or necks. Wide straps also help to distribute the weight more easily.

  • Durability

My kids are rough. Book bags need to be water resisitant and made of strong fabric that doesn’t rip. Since Jazz is in high school and Nannah is in middle school, their books are much heavier. They have to have bags that can hold all of that weight.

  • Price

I don’t look for cheap book bags. I look for deals. Cheap book bags with poor stitching do not hold up well and are a waste of money. When it rips, you will end up having to buy another one. And most likely it will not be on sale  :(

  • Size

Just like with everything else, your kids need to have the right sized book bag for their needs. If the book bag is too small it will not hold all of their school books and supplies. If it is too big and bulky, it will be a hassle to carry around.

After all consider all of these points, then I let the kids have a say in the color or design.

My back to school tip is to always try to reuse school supplies from previous years. New and shiny may be appealing, but you can save a lot of money and trees by using up the rest of those old notebooks.
