Making Milk Solid #ElmersScienceReady

My kids are pretty crafty, way more than me. If you look in Kayla’s room there is quite a collection of craft  supplies so she can get creative whenever she wants.

Kayla and TJ were more than excited when we were asked to do a science project using Elmer’s products. Did you know that they make an X-TREME glue stick? Our home is always stocked with regular Elmer’s glue and Elmer’s Disappearing Purple Washable glue sticks so we ready to go to the next level with X-TREME glue sticks.

The first thing we had to do was choose a science experiment. The kids wanted to try something they have not done before. Kayla and TJ finally agreed to trying to make milk solid. This is a pretty easy experiment because we already had skim milk and vinegar on hand.

We needed:

1 1/2 cups of skim milk

4 teaspoons of white vinegar

Next:

we poured the milk in a bowl

added the vinegar

it started to bubble

after one minute in the microwave

after another minute, we stirred it

the milk started to clump together

we put it in the strainer

after cooling

We did this experiment twice. The first time Kayla was able to form a ball with the milk and it even bounced a little. After a little more handling the milk crumbled. The second experiment we waited for it to cool entirely, but we not able to do much with it. I think we had the wrong type of strainer.

Kayla and TJ’s Thoughts

Kayla: I did not think the milk would get hard. It was cool seeing it separate after we warmed it up. It felt weird and slimy in my hands.

TJ: I thought the vinegar would make the milk turn into a paste. I did not expect the milk to bounce.

They both agreed that the smell was pretty bad. The vinegar comes across pretty strong. The more it set out, the more it smelled like spoiled milk.

This turned out to be two experiments in one. The kids mixed 1/4 cup of skim milk with 2 teaspoons of vinegar together. It sat on the table a few hours to see if curds would appear.

it separated a little

We will be trying this project again with a different type of strainer. Here is the finished project that Kayla did.

Today were repeating the experiment but this time one pan has tap water and the other pan has salt water. Tomorrow were going to make pans of ice with food coloring in it to make stained glass…So these are easy experiments and activities to do with a young child.
