Family Movie Night With The Secret Life Of Pets and a Giveaway!

This post is in partnership with Universal Pictures Home Entertainment

I know I am not the only person who has wondered what your pets do when you’re not home. Our dog Scottie finds a way to get into everything when are gone. I just imagine him running in and out of rooms, jumping on the couch or bed and messing with stuff he know he is not allowed to touch.

Since we love Family Movie Night, I got the family together to watch The Secret Life of Pets.

This new release features nearly an hour of bonus content, including three hilarious mini-movies: the all-new Norman Television and Weenie plus Mower Minions which debuted in theaters. I love the Minions and I am happy that they had a mini movie. My family enjoys watching all the extra bonus content and there are some great bonuses included with The Secret Life of Pets.  The Hotdog Singalong with Max and Duke is cute and catchy. I can’t get it out of my head. I also liked the musical mash up of Snowball’s one-liners.

secret life of pets movie night

I can definitely see this movie becoming a family favorite. It is fun to see life from the perspective of your pet. We laughed all throughout the movie.  It was so cute how Max looked at his relationship with Katie as them being soul mates, truly best friends. I always tell the kids to never forget about our dog Scottie. We see so much more of the world then he does but we are his world. All of the pets are funny but I think Snowball was the funniest. He was all about the struggle and liberating animals. Kevin Hart did a great job as the voice of Snowball.

Kubo and the Two Strings Movie Review

While I watch a lot of movies, I can’t say that I watch very many that use stop motion. But the uniqueness of Kubo and The Two Strings really caught my attention. I was happy when a copy was sent to me to review.

kubo and the two strings combo pack

From acclaimed animation studio LAIKA comes an all-new epic adventure starring the voice talents of Academy Award® winners Charlize Theron (Mad Max: Fury Road) and Matthew McConaughey (Interstellar). Young Kubo (voiced by Art Parkinson of Game of Thrones) mesmerizes the people in his village with his magical gift for spinning fantastical tales. When he accidentally summons an evil spirit seeking vengeance, Kubo journeys on an action-packed quest to solve the mystery of his fallen samurai father, discover his own magical powers, and reunite his family.

Kubo and the Two Strings stars an all-star supporting voice cast including George Takei (Star Trek), Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (The Man in the High Castle), and Academy Award® nominees Ralph Fiennes (Harry Potter), Brenda Vaccaro (Johnny Bravo), and Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo).

Kubo and the Two Strings is a very  good movie. The animation is amazing! I loved all the details. I also enjoyed the creative storytelling.  It is a little dark along the lines of Coraline so I wouldn’t recommend it for very young children. It may be a little too spooky for them. This movie will definitely spark some conversation because it covers some emotional topics liking losing a loved one. Kubo and the Two Strings stresses the importance of family and understanding one another.

Bonus Features Exclusive to Blu-ray™ 3D Combo Pack & Blu-ray™ Combo Pack

  •  Introduction by Director/Producer Travis Knight: Director/Producer Travis Knight introduces “Kubo’s Journey.”
  • Mythological Monsters: The filmmakers and crew discuss the new techniques they used to create the terrifying antagonists. Learn how each monster differed in scale, design, and execution.
  • Braving the Elements: A particularly challenging aspect of filming was animating water and rain effects. Discover how LAIKA was able to animate water in the context of a stop-motion film.
  • The Redemptive and Healing Power of Music: Learn how traditional and contemporary musical styles were combined by Academy Award®-winning composer Dario Marianelli (Atonement) to infuse the film with such a heartfelt sound.
  • Epilogue by Director/Producer Travis Knight: Director/Producer Travis Knight discusses what attracted LAIKA to Kubo and the Two Strings.

Bonus Features on Blu-ray™ 3D Combo Pack & Blu-ray™ Combo Pack and DVD

  •  Japanese Inspiration: The LAIKA creative team and the cast discuss the inspirations for the story.
  • Corners of the Earth: Filmmakers and crew discuss the challenges of the varied landscapes and locations in Kubo and the Two Strings.
  • The Myth of Kubo: Cast and filmmakers discuss the story at the core of Kubo and the Two Strings.

Set in a world like ours but entirely inhabited by animals, Sing stars Buster Moon (McConaughey), a dapper koala who presides over a once-grand theater that has fallen on hard times.  Buster is an eternal-some might even, say delusional-optimist who loves his theater above all and will do anything to preserve it.  Now faced with the crumbling of his life’s ambition, he has one final chance to restore his fading jewel to its former glory by producing the world’s greatest singing competition.

Five lead contestants emerge: Mike (MacFarlane), a mouse who croons as smoothly as he cons; Meena (Kelly), a timid teenage elephant with an enormous case of stage fright; Rosita (Witherspoon), an overtaxed mother run ragged tending a litter of 25 piglets; Ash (Johansson),
a punk-rock porcupine struggling to shed her arrogant boyfriend and go solo and Johnny (Egerton), a young gangster gorilla looking to break free of his family’s felonies.

Each arrives under Buster’s marquee believing that this is their shot to change the course of their life.  And as Buster coaches each of his contestants closer and closer to the grand finale, he starts to learn that maybe the theater isn’t the only thing that is in need of saving.

In their fifth fully animated feature-film collaboration, Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures present The Secret Life of Pets, a comedy about the lives our pets lead when we leave for work or school. Max, voiced by Louis C.K., is a loyal terrier living a perfectly happy existence until his owner, Katie (Ellie Kemper) brings home Duke (Eric Stonestreet) a big, boisterous mutt she finds at the shelter. When Max and his unruly new “roommate” slip away from their dog-walker, they find themselves lost in the urban jungle of New York City with no pet products & supplies to survive. In an attempt to stay ahead of animal control and a rebel band of abandoned pets led by an unhinged bunny named Snowball (Kevin Hart), they put aside their differences to survive the epic journey back home.

You Can Finally Bring Finding Dory Home!

It has been 13 years since Finding Nemo has stolen the hearts of Disney fans everywhere. I am happy to share that you can bring the sequel, Finding Dory home. The summer blockbuster hit, Disney Pixar’s Finding Dory, swims home just in time for the holidays on Digital HD and Disney Movies Anywhere (DMA) on Oct. 25 and on Blu-ray 3D™, Blu-ray, DVD and On-Demand on Nov. 15.

null

I was provided product for review purposes. Opinions are 100% my own.

When Dory, the forgetful blue tang (Ellen DeGeneres), suddenly remembers she has a family who may be looking for her, she, Marlin (Albert Brooks) and Nemo (Hayden Rolence) take off on a life-changing quest to find them … with help from Hank, a cantankerous octopus; Bailey, a beluga whale who’s convinced his biological sonar skills are on the fritz; and Destiny, a nearsighted whale shark.

My kids were just as excited as I was when I found out about Finding Dory. We saw it at the movie theaters and there were more adults than kids! The movie is very funny and we fell in love with Dory all over again. The colors in the movie are absolutely beautiful and I really enjoyed the message of friendship throughout the movie. Like during most Disney movies I watch, I did end up tearing up at a few scenes. Even though this is a sequel, you can still enjoy the movie if you have not seen Finding Nemo.

finding-dory

The film’s playful and plentiful bonus offerings include “Piper,” the theatrical short film starring an irresistible sandpiper hatchling; an all-new mini short featuring interviews with Dory’s pals from the Marine Life Institute; a behind-the-scenes look at the most challenging character Pixar has ever created; never-before-seen deleted scenes, including a digital exclusive featuring the Tank Gang from “Finding Nemo” who make it their mission to get Marlin and Nemo to the Marine Life Institute; and much, much more.

Curious about all the details and weird facts about the work that went into creating Finding Dory‘s favorite Octopus, Hank? Well I have some fun facts and a bonus clip about Hank to share with you.

Hank Fun Facts

LUCKY NUMBER SEVEN – When designers were working on Hank, the cantankerous octopus in “Finding Dory,” they created tapered tentacles for the cephalopod. The tentacles were modeled separately from the body, but when they tried to attach them, only seven would fit. Filmmakers later decided that it made sense that Hank would have an affliction, so they worked it into the script.

350 suckers are found on Hank: 50 suckers on each of his seven arms.

11,041 rigging prims were created just for Hank’s simulation (the average character requires around 20).

118 weeks were required of the team of technical directors who were responsible for building and articulating Hank.

22 weeks were spent shading Hank to give him extra texture and color, as well as making it possible for him to camouflage himself. (An average character takes less than eight weeks.)

Holiday Movie Prize Pack Giveaway

My family can’t get enough of watching holiday themed movies. Even though we are only in the second week of November, I don’t think it is too early to start watching some of our favorites. I like to add some new ones to our collection too. This year it is the Holiday Double Feature of Santa’s Apprentice and The Magic Snowflake.

holiday dvd prize pack giveaway

Tis the season to bring home some holiday cheer with Santa’s Apprentice and The Magic Snowflake arriving as a special DVD double feature, as well as individually on DVD from Anchor Bay Entertainment and The Weinstein Company.  Based on the animated television series “SantApprentice,” the perfect gift for anybody naughty or nice comes with jolly goodies including 16 winter themed decals to help spread the joy.

Santa’s Apprentice DVD giveaway

In Santa’s Apprentice, starring Julie Gayet (My Best Friend, Select Hotel), Jean-Pierre Marielle (The Da Vinci Code), Max Cullen (The Great Gatsby, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Australia), Gabe Eggerling (The Kicks, “Jake and the Never Land Pirates”), Santa doesn’t want to retire, but rules are rules and he must train someone to replace him. The lucky winner, to be chosen from among millions of children, must be named Nicholas, be an orphan and have a pure heart.

Santa’s Apprentice DVD giveaway

On the other side of the planet, there is a little boy who is a perfect match, but his lack of self-confidence and fear of heights make him a poor contestant. Will Santa agree to step down, and help his apprentice take his place?

The Magic Snowflake DVD giveaway

In the sequel to Santa’s Apprentice, The Magic Snowflake, starring Vincent Grass (The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, Ernest & Celestine), Nathan Simony (Santa’s Apprentice, “Merlin”), the new Santa is a seven year-old boy.

The Magic Snowflake DVD giveaway

As Nicholas contracts the illness of those who want to grow up too fast: Grown-up-itis, The Council of Retired Santas is forced to relieve him of his duties and appoint an experienced Santa who will be able to manage the delivery in time. To get his job back, Nicholas must regain the innocence, freshness and carefree attitude of his childhood.

These are really cute movies.  There is nice message about believing in yourself and not being in a rush to grow up. I like that it is available as a double feature because you don’t have to go searching for the sequel.  The festive holiday wall decals are a nice bonus that the kids can use to help decorate the houe.

The Santa’s Apprentice and The Magic Snowflake double feature is ready for gift wrapping on DVD for the suggested retail price of $19.98.
