Last week for our Family Movie Night, I chose The Great and Powerful Oz. I was sent the Blu-ray combo to review and we were not able to catch it at the theaters. It was on our to watch list but we never got around to it.
[box] “When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot. Fame and fortune are his for the taking. That is until he meets three witches: Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity and even a bit of wizardry, Oscar transforms himself not only into a great wizard but into a better man as well.“[/box]
I put the blu-ray in to start and was a little confused at first. The movie started in black and white and the picture size was small on our tv screen.
I spent a good few minutes trying to adjust the settings. I was pressing the zoom, widescreen and stretch buttons. Nothing happened. I finally gave up because I figured that is the way it was made.
So we started watching the movie and we are introduced to Oz. He is a circus magician who performs in a tattered suit. Oz hires women to sit in the audience and volunteer when his magic act calls for one. He meets these women in the different towns the circus visits. He likes to give these women a music box that “belonged” to his grandmother.
During his latest act, Oz is asked to make a little girl walk again. She really believes in him. Of course he can not do it because his magic is not real. He runs off the stage and is soon confronted by Vlad the “Strong Man”. Oz gave his wife a music box.
Oz decides to escape in a hot air balloon after telling Mr. Baum he will meet him in Milwaukee. The kids thought that was kinda cool since we live in Milwaukee.
The hot air balloon gets caught in a tornado. Oz is so scared he yells out promises to change if he saved from this storm.
Then something happens. Oz is transported to somewhere he does not recognize. Everything starts to turn to color.
Beautiful colors begin to take over the screen while it enlarges.
These screenshots don’t do this movie justice. The colors are so vibrant you can not look away from the screen. I loved it! This is when we learn Oz’s real name which is Oscar Zoroaster Phadrig Isaac Norman.
Next the adventure starts. I don’t want to give away anymore about the movie but I can say you will discover lots of secrets and surprises. You will meet some characters you will fall in love with and have lots of laughs.
The movie is a fun pick for Family Movie Night. I didn’t hear any complaints. The kids were pleasantly surprised about the storyline because they had thoughts that this would be similar to the Wizard of Oz.
We had fun with the bonus content. We were able to see the characters come to life. Kayla thought it was amazing to see the process for making up the Evil witch. The kids really enjoyed watching the bloopers. Those are always fun to watch.
